Reds 2-0 Wigan: Kuyt double secures Champions League football

Dirk Kuyt scored twice against WiganDirk Kuyt was the hero at Anfield as he improved his Premiership goal tally to 12 goals this season with a goal in each half against Wigan Athletic.

The win confirms that Liverpool can finish no lower than 4th this season and will enter the Champions League qualifiers in the summer (hopefully we may not have to ‘qualify’).

Kuyt was widely tipped to make way against Chelsea with Crouch and/or Bellamy preferred but his two goals may give Benitez some food for thought.

[Match Report: Liverpool 2-0 Wigan Athletic]

Rafa started this game with Gerrard, Agger, Mascherano and Bellamy on the bench – electing to play a relatively lightweight midfield of Pennant, Zenden, Alonso and Gonzalez.  The midfield quarter, who have all had their performance problems at times this season, responded well.  It was Pennant’s whipped cross that set Kuyt up for his goal on the half hour – a header from about 8 yards.

Bellamy, Gerrard and Agger came on in the second half and Bellamy made an immediate impact, causing defensive calamity for Wigan, and assisting Kuyt’s goal – a shot in to the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

A victory was always expected by reds fans today.  The reds delivered the three points.
