Reds XI draws with Peterborough

Saturday, 21st July 2007

It was perhaps fitting that Mark Tyler, the Peterborough United keeper for whom this testimonial was arranged, kept a clean sheet as a second string Liverpool side drew 0-0 in today’s friendly.

With most of the Liverpool first team in Hong Kong preparing for the Barclays Asia trophy, Gary Ablett took charge of some of Liverpool’s new youngsters, and a handful of players who have moved from the Academy to Melwood this summer.

Over 9,000 fans turned up at London Road to witness the reds take on the Posh - managed by the Old Trafford manager’s son - Darren Ferguson.

Krisztian Nemeth and Andras Simon, Liverpool’s two new Hungarian imports both played a part - as did Besian Idrizaj - the hat-trick hero from the Wrexham game.

However, the game was devoid of any real sparkle - and the biggest cheer of the day was for Mark Tyler who has so far made over 450 appearances for Peterborough in a 13 year spell.

Team

Liverpool – Hansen, Peltier, Smith, Roque, Huth, Spearing, Flynn (Crowther 66), Le Tallec, Lindfield (Nemeth 46), Idrizaj (Brouwer 73), Putterill (Simon 59). Subs not used – Oldfield, Kelly.

I was at the match and thought that both Idrizaj and Roque looked fine prospects for the future.
