Good luck to the reds for Confederations Cup

Liverpool fans will spend the next fortnight sweating over the fitness of 5 of our Spanish contingent as the Confederations Cup gets underway in South Africa.

There are five Liverpool players in the Spain squad for the tournament which kicks off on Sunday.  (Oh, and Dossena is in the Italy squad).

With Liverpool due to return to pre-season training on the 4th July, and with the tournament scheduled to end on the 28th June then you can already see that Liverpool’s players will have little of a summer break.

However, the reds are believed to be allowing the Spanish players involved an extra 10 days off but after the exploits of Spain in the European Championships last summer, the strain on the reds Spain stars is a definite concern.

Fernando Torres suffered recurrent injuries last season, and Rafa has been critical of the Spanish coaching methods.  Another summer without a proper break is not ideal preparation as Liverpool aim to have another tilt at the title.

So for two weeks we will be worried at every challenge our players suffer, but hopefully enjoying some cracking football along the way.

The Spanish games in the group stages are as follows:

14th June New Zealand v Spain
17th June Spain v Iraq
20th June Spain v South Africa

Should they progress further then:

Semi’s 24th/25th June
Final / 3rd qualifying place 28th June

You can keep up with the Confederations Cup tournament, with information on TV channels broadcasting the game etc, in the forum.

  1. I agree the players need the break but it will not be played at the same intensity as the Euro’s last year, less games even if you win it also. My worry comes next summer after the world cup when the players won’t have had a rest at all for three summers.
