Carra U-turn: Named in England squad

Jamie Carragher who retired from international football three years ago has been named in the England’s initial 30 man World Cup squad.

The 32 year old central defender has 34 international caps but retired because of a combination of not being first choice, and in the hope of extending his club career at Liverpool.

The full squad is:

Goalkeepers Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green

Defenders Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock

Midfielders Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips

Forwards Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney

Carragher’s return to the England squad has been met with surprise, especially after what can only be described as an indifferent season at Liverpool.

What are your thoughts on his U-turn?

Carra U-turn: Named in England squad

  1. his body on the line is part of what makes this defender so great.

All in all allot of fans from outside of Anfield don’t want him to go and believe he is past it and what i would say to those people is this, “That you have very short and selective memories”. If i recall last season allot of fans were arguing about the form of Ferdinand and how ‘lazy’ and ‘out of position’ he always was when needed ( this was both england and manu fans by the way) and im not going to nit pick that both these players have been surrounded by controversy many times showing them selves to lack character.

Im not saying they are poor players , far from it and there mistakes both on and off the field are just that. But Carragher deserves to go to Africa.

  2. Well despite his season he’s shown top character in coming back into form and barring a few blips he’s been back to his best, especially in his cover play ( he always appears in the rite place at the rite time)
In my opinion he has never received the accolade that he has deserved and is just as solid as John Terry and Rio Ferdinand. He has been one of the best defenders this country has had for the last 10 years and his only weakness is that he focuses on defending only and there is little dynamism going forward when compared to Terry & Ferdinand along with maybe loosing some pace over the past few years. However he has lost non of his excellent ability at reading the game and players nor his dogged determination and willingness to throw..
