Liverpool granted extension on new stadium option

Liverpool City Council have extended the option on a lease for Stanley Park, the site of a potential new Liverpool FC stadium.

The original option expired in June, but the council declared that LFC had undertook sufficient work to still be in with a chance of taking over the site.

Liverpool, and new owners Fenway Sports Group, are currently considering the options of a ground redevelopment or a new stadium on Stanley Park, adjacent to the existing Anfield.

Liverpool would pay £300,000 a year to lease the site, and the council have already suggested that they would prefer the club to build a new ground, rather than redevelop Anfield. Planning permission will need to be sought for any changes to the existing 44,000 seat stadium.

According to The Guardian, the extension however is only valid for 3 months – meaning that Liverpool will need to continue to prioritise the decision on the future of the stadium.

  1. i want anfield to get developed because we are one of the most traditional clubs in english football and anfield is the home and heart of liverpool.  other teams feel the atmosphere at anfield it is like no other if you have been to some of the new stadiums heartless not an experance a true fan wants

  2. Appears if FSG sells a sufficient naming rights deal, a new stadium will be built. If not, they will redevelop Anfield. The economics have to work for a new stadium. The city on the other hand wants the rent for Stanley Park to fund regeneration in the area…

  3. anfield is by far the most historical club football ground in england, if a new stadium is to be built, the shankly and paisley gates must be moved also along with the hillsborough memorial and of course the name. If it is renamed, the ‘this is anfield’ sign that has been above the tunnel staircase since shanks will be of no use. If possible, just make anfield bigger!!! Just dont remove any of our history!!!

  4. There is no reason for a 75,000 stadium! It’s not about justifying the numbers of who want to visit Anfield every week, it’s about getting right numbers in the bank for the club and the owners and foremost, it’s about what the supporters want! And i think on behalf of us all a redevelopment would be the best option. Cause I’ve spoke to lots of people in the area and ALL of them were more than glad when JWH brought up the word REDEVELOPMENT for the first time. There is no occasion why we need anything bigger than a 60,000 all-seater stadium! That’ll be 16,000 to add on four stands which is realistic to implement, as far as I’m concerned.

    • liverpool need a 75,000 stadium to compete. 60,000 makes no economic sense. its also a status thing. all the giant clubs have giant stadiums. real, barca, scum, milan

  5. I never thought that I would be cheering for Liverpool City Council but it may be that the only way of getting a completely new stadium is just that! They are the hope in as much as objections within the council to NOT continuing with the proposal ( which now seems to be decades old! ) will help decide the physical move forward. We NEED a much bigger stadium than ever Anfield could provide. Only last week FSG was increasing season ticket applications by 70,000 so they must believe that there is a following there to justify a STADIUM OF 75,000+
Things are moving on field so is it not time things began moving off it?
