Burnley 2-0 Liverpool: Disjointed reds suffer first Premier League defeat

Liverpool produced an insipid display as Burnley collected their first win of the season and left Liverpool fans feeling back to square one.

Daniel Sturridge returned to the starting line up but offered little in the game in which the reds were  behind within 2 minutes.

From the outset Burnley harried and rushed Liverpool and it was Clyne who gave the ball away which led to Burnley's opener - Sam Vokes the goalscorer.

In the 37th minute the Clarets had their second shot on target.  Again - it went in.  Ragnar Klavan was caught in possession in the middle and Gray then sidestepped both Lovren and Klavan before firing past Mignolet.

Following his penalty save against Arsenal, Simon Mignolet had saved two shots and conceded five goals.

The reds were hopeless throughout - Henderson guilty of too many poor passes, Wijnaldum proving some Newcastle fans right that he only appeared for the home games.  Firmino and Sturridge isolated and lacking that spark of brilliance.  Coutinho a world away from his inspired performance against Arsenal.

Liverpool had chances - but they were half-chances, weak shots from the edge of the box - with little to test Tom Heaton in the Burnley goal.

Divock Origi was sent on for the final 25 minutes to replace Daniel Sturridge.  Alberto Moreno and Marko Grujic (making his debut) came on a bit later to replace Milner and Lallana.

The substitutions failed to alter the scoreline and the reds will have to go away to lick their wounds.  Liverpool's inconsistency continues, and Championship side Burton will fancy their chances of a League Cup upset on Tuesday night.

More to follow.
