Match Preview – Spurs (A)

Carling Cup 4th Round
Wed 12th November 7.45pm, White Hart Lane

Liverpool return to White Hart Lane, the scene of our only defeat so far this season determined to gain revenge but more importantly qualify for the next round of the League Cup.

Spurs, the holders of the tournament, have had a rejuvenation since Harry Redknapp arrived at the club so will be in no mood to allow for an upset.

The Liverpool side to face Spurs will be vastly different to the side which faced them in the Premiership. Expect the likes of Degen, Hyypia, Insua, El Zhar to be given their chance to shine.  Degen was injured in the last round of this cup, so a return for him would be especially of interest.

Torres is still regaining match fitness and could well also figure in this midweek game.

History

Spurs inflicted the reds first defeat of the season, in a game largely controlled by the reds, on the 1st November 2008.

Liverpool’s last cup fixture against Spurs was in the League Cup 5th round in December 2004.  A goal for each side in injury time sent the game to penalties, which Liverpool went on to win 5-4.

Ten years ago both sides met in this competition at the same stage, with Spurs dumping the reds out 3-1 at Anfield, and everyone can remember the defeat at Anfield in 1995 – when Klinsmann helped remove Liverpool from that season’s FA Cup.

Betting

The betting is pretty close on this one, probably reflecting the fact the reds will field an under-strength side.
