Americans plan to ‘supersize’ new Anfield

In dramatic developments today, work on the new Anfield stadium has been temporarily halted after Liverpool’s new owners, days in to taking control of the new club, are looking at plans to build the Premiership’s biggest football stadium.

It now appears that both Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jnr were unimpressed by the lack of ambition shown by the previous board in settling for a 61,000 seater stadium. Bringing their own unique American brand of ‘supersizing’ it is believed plans are being looked at to build a stadium with a capacity of at least 76,500 – what would be the biggest football stadium in England after the national Wembley stadium.

Liverpool are believed to have a season ticket waiting list with 56,000 names on it. The 60,000 seater stadium was expected to take on an extra 14,000 season ticket holders (on top of the current 24,000).

It is apparent that even with a 60,000 seater stadium some of the present ticketing problems would still remain.

Liverpool will need to act quickly in order to ensure that European development money is used in the project.
