Marseille: Post Match Comments

Post match comments following tonights poor result against Marseille.

Benitez:

“We couldn’t create many chances. We were not controlling the middle. “After we conceded we created some chances at the end, but everything was wrong.

“You must give them (Marseille) credit because they were working hard, were well organised and were pressing and we were giving the ball away.

“We knew it could be like this with the players they have with pace and ability.

“We were trying to change players and trying to change positions. We were trying, but really the team was playing bad.”

“It was a poor game for us, we did not play well and we did not make many chances. It was clearly not our day.

“To get through in this competition you need wins. Draws are not enough.

“We now know that we must win our next match away to Besiktas.”

“We can talk about team selection but we are talking about big names out there, but they did not play well.

“Is there anything positive to take from the match? The only comforting thing is that it has finished.”

New Marseille Boss – Eric Gerets

“We were not expected to win this one, but we felt if we took the initiative and tried to attack, it would be a good tactic.

“We tried to get men forward and that is what brought us this victory.”

Goalscorer – Mathieu Velbuena

“I’m delighted this evening, because that was my first Champions League goal and, moreover, it gave Olympique Marseille a very important victory.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult place to come, and now we’ll just enjoy the result.

“It’s superb to be [group] leader this evening [with six points from six.] After the [2-0] match against Besiktas, we came to Liverpool to win, which isn’t easy for anyone.

“But we were solid this evening: we defended as a unit, we were all together. It’s great.

“We’re starting afresh with a new coach, and with a Champions League win, and we’ll look for more from here.”
