Anfield expands – Liverpool offers advice over increased congestion

With Anfield set to welcome an additional 8,500 people per game this season the club has today reminded supporters of the options available for getting to the stadium safely and timely.

The football stadium is 2 miles away from the city centre's railway station, Lime Street.  For many supporters the best option (if you are able and it's not raining!) could be to walk it.  It's about a 40 minute walk.  Uphill to Anfield, downhill on the way back.

Elsewhere there are several options available for fans depending on your preferred mode of transport.

Car

If you want to park in an 'official' LFC car park then expect to be disappointed - most passes are already taken by season ticket holders or corporate fans - if you are over 65 the club have a limited number of passes available.  Local schools and private companies also offer limited parking relatively close to the ground for a fee.  Traffic wardens are prevalent on match days to punish parking misdemeanours with a >£60 fine.

Free parking is provided just off the East Lancs Road, a major trunk road into Liverpool (postcode: L11 0BB).  From here you can catch the number 19 bus to and from the ground. (£2 each way).

Bus

If you don't fancy the walk from the city centre to the ground then the new 917 service will take you from St Johns Lane (opposite Lime Street) to the ground.  Pricing is a £12 return ticket for groups of four and U19’s can travel for just £1.  It will be ready to depart back straight after the game.

The 26 and 17 buses also operate from the city centre to the ground.  Buses 68/168/14/19 get you within a reasonable walk of the stadium.

Train

From outside Liverpool you will arrive at Liverpool's main train station Lime Street and can take the bus or foot option.

Within the Merseyside area, on the Northern Line, you might find it easier to get to Sandhills or Kirkdale stations.

The Soccerbus departs from Sandhills station between 2 hours before and up to 15 minutes before kick off.  It runs for up to 50 minutes after the game from Anfield back to Sandhills.

Merseyrail passengers can add a return Soccerbus ticket on to their rail travel for just £1.60 for adults and 80p for children at any staffed station.

Alternatively you can walk from either Sandhills or Kirkdale stations ~30 mins.

Taxi

You can get a taxi to and from Anfield although these are often busy around match time and the closer you get to kick off the slower the journey will be (people walking past you is never a good sign)!  LFC advise a taxi fare of around £7-£9 for the journey from the ground to the city centre.

Cycle

If you've been inspired by the Olympics you can always park your bike in a secure facility at Stanley Park.  The club will issue you with a receipt and an attendant will be present at the Cycle Hub.  A great option - but please remember not to mix cycling with alcohol - doesn't end well.

Further development

There had been discussions in the past about a more integrated transport policy but Liverpool managed to squeeze through the Main Stand expansion without too much opposition from the local council.

The area will be significantly busier on a matchday.  A sizeable increase will be corporate entertainment which the club will cater for inside the stadium.  However, allow a little bit more time for our first home game against Leicester no matter which end of the ground you are in - and if you're tickets are in the new Main Stand - again get to the ground a little earlier so you can identify where you need to get to.
