Hoever impresses, Wilson’s great strike – reds pre-season ends with Lyon win

Just hours after receiving a long term contract extension - reds youngster Ki-Jana Hoever impressed at the Stade de Geneve in a 3-1 victory over French side Lyon.

Klopp reshuffled his starting XI from the previous two games.  He welcomed back five Liverpool stars and combined them with youth in a game that eventually saw 27 Liverpool players take to the field.

In such circumstances it is impossible to provide any sort of tactical overview of the game, but Hoever put in another impressive display.  The Academy to first team route may hopefully be back in business - as the emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold will have given a huge boost to the younger players at the club.

Klopp's ethos of 'opening the door' for younger players - but they 'must go through themselves' appears to have incentivised many at the club.

With only youth signings brought in this summer it would now be a real shame if too many of these players are sent off out on loan.

And certainly the desire to keep hold of Harry Wilson must have surely intensified over the course of these past four weeks.

Tonight he was on hand to fire in the 3rd goal - a sublime effort from outside the box.

Brazilians back - goals at either end

Bobby Firmino grabbed a goal in his brief 30 minute cameo - providing an equaliser after Alisson had made an uncharacteristic fumble which led to Lyon getting a fortunate penalty.  Memphis Depay putting them in the lead in the opening stages.

An own goal moments later put the reds into the driving seat when Joachim Andersen turned in a Ki-Jana Hoever cross.

The reds made changes at 30 minutes, half time and then a complete eleven switch at the hour mark.

By then they were 3-1 in the lead after Harry Wilson's dipping volley.

All in all a good end to pre-season and the reds can now turn their attention to the ramping up of the season.

The Community Shield at Wembley will be out of the way Sunday evening and then the reds can fully focus on the beginning of the Premier League campaign and then a midweek trip to meet the UEFA Cup winners Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup Final.
