Maxi Rodriguez aiming to return to Argentina

Rodriguez, Messi and Zanetti battle it out last weekend

Despite his purple patch at the end of the season, that saw him deliver two hat-tricks, LFC and 30 year old Maxi Rodriguez look set for a parting of the ways.

Speaking to Argentine newspaper La Capital ahead of last weekend’s charity match he insisted that he has spoken to the president of his old club, Newell’s Old Boys, and agreed to return.  The decision lies in the hands of Liverpool FC.

A team of ‘Friends of Maxi’ took on an opposition side captained by Inter Milan’s Javier Zanetti.  The game was played at Newell Old Boys ground – the club that spawned a succession of talented Argentine’s – Messi amongst them.

“When I left here, I knew I was coming back.

The president [Guillermo Lorente] called me and I said yes. Now it depends on the contract I have in Liverpool, maybe that can be loosened a little.”

Rodriguez left Argentina in 2002, moving to Espanyol – before  a move to Atletico Madrid in 2005.  He signed for Liverpool on a free contract in January 2010 and was one of Benitez’ last Liverpool signings. His Liverpool contract runs until 2013.
