Kolo Toure Liverpool signing makes sense

Last night the sports media were filled with rumours about Kolo Toure's proposed move to Liverpool in June.

Jamie Carragher's departure will need more than a Kolo Toure to fill, but it appears that Liverpool and Fenway are still prepared to bring in older players if the price is right.  Or in this case a free transfer.

Similar happened with Craig Bellamy who was brought in, also from Man City, to fill a pressing gap in the Liverpool squad.

With the potential departure of Martin Skrtel, and possibly even Pepe Reina, it is wise to bring in an older head with top level Premier League experience to help the Liverpool defence through what will no doubt be a transitional period.

32 year old Toure would provide some extra maturity in the Liverpool defence, although his international commitments weigh heavy on the number of games in which he is available.

However the Africa Cup of Nations will not be played again until 2015, assuming he is still available for the squad then.

With Man City keen to trim down their wage bill - and the player's contract ending next month - it appears the move could make perfect sense for all parties.

Toure is currently away with the Man City squad on a post-season tour.
