Congratulations Milan

It was destined to not be our night. Our seventh final ended in defeat as Milan gained revenge for the final in Istanbul two years ago.

Compared to two years ago Liverpool started on the front foot, dominating much of the play in the game. Mascherano was immense, keeping Kaka under control in the midfield.

But Liverpool lacked the firepower up front and Milan’s free kick just before half time took a lucky deflection and the Italians went in to the break 1-0 up.

The second half dragged on, Inzaghi scored again to effectively end our dreams. A Dirk Kuyt header late on threatened to set up a grand stand finish but it wasn’t to be. 2-1 to Milan.

Before the dust even settles on the final, Benitez is already planning an expansion and a clear out at Anfield. Mark Gonzalez looks set to leave first, with Zenden sure to follow.

Defeat in such an occasion is hard to take, but we were there. We wish all the reds a safe journey back from Athens and we look forward to another season – one in which not only do we hope to continue our amazing European form but also push nearer to the top English football.

Congratulations to Milan. We’ll see you in a final again soon for the decider…
