Match Preview – Sunderland v Liverpool

Liverpool will kick off the Premiership season, as has become the norm, away from home in a late kick off.

Roy Keane’s Sunderland will entertain Liverpool in the evening kick off, and after Liverpool’s tough scrap against Standard Liege in mid-week, Liverpool supporters will be looking for a much improved performance.

Steven Gerrard is expected to return to partner Xabi Alonso in the centre of midfield and Robbie Keane will make his reds Premiership debut.  Andrea Dossena will also be looking to improve on mid-week.

The Mackems have been busy in the transfer market, signing former Liverpool spitter El Hadji Diouf, and a trio of players from Spurs including Pascal Chimbonda.

Both Alonso and Benayoun picked up knocks mid-week but are expected to feature.

History

Liverpool have beaten Sunderland home and away on each of the last four Premiership meetings.  Sunderland are after their 50th win against Liverpool whilst Liverpool are after their 63rd victory. Sunderland have only beaten Liverpool once in the Premiership, a 2-1 win in 2002.
