Match Preview – Everton (h)

FA Premiership
Mon 19th January 2009 @ 8pm
Anfield

After a disappointing draw the reds host Everton in the Premiership in the first of a double-header of games against their local rivals.

Depending on other results the reds may find themselves second in the Premiership by Monday evening and will be hoping to gain maximum points against an Everton side riding high and with a decent away record. Liverpool have drawn 4 of their last 7 Premiership games and while Anfield has remained a fortress during 2008, too many draws have hampered Liverpool’s charge for a record 19th title.

History

The 209th Merseyside derby is just 6 days ahead of the 210th Merseyside derby which will be played on the 25th January – in which a place in the FA Cup 5th round will be at stake.

Anfield clashes between the two clubs tend to result in more goals than over at Goodison Park, and the reds have won 39 times compared to the blues 24 in the 94 Anfield derbies.

Everton’s last victory at Anfield was ten years ago – in September 1999 – when both Westerveld and Gerrard were sent off for Liverpool.  Fernando Torres scored the only goal in the last Anfield derby in March last year.
