Liverpool 1-0 Everton: Substitute Origi sinks the blues – Pickford with the assist

Liverpool won the 100th league Merseyside derby at Anfield thanks to a late goal from the lesser spotted Divock Origi.

The Belgian striker is developing a taste for derby goals, despite having featured rarely for the reds in recent times.  The 'England number 1' Jordan Pickford was a crucial part of the Liverpool goal - when he kept a van Dijk attempt in play for the Belgian to head in.

The goal arrived in the 96th minute of the game.

Liverpool, still below par, have now amassed 36 points in their opening 14 games.  11 wins and 3 draws in an unbeaten opening 14 games - our best league opening.  And it extends the gap to 5 points over third placed Chelsea, although Man City still lead the Premier League by 2 points.

Jurgen Klopp made three changes for the game, one enforced.  Jordan Henderson's red card last week allowed space for Fabinho to come in.  Joe Gomez slotted back to centre-back replacing Lovren, allowing Alexander-Arnold to return.  Xherdan Shaqiri also returned to the line up - he came in for James Milner.

It was a competitive first half - Everton arguably with the better of the chances, Liverpool with the majority of the chances.  Yerry Mina headed wide when it looked simpler to force the keeper in to a save, and Alisson Becker was on hand, combined with a stunning clearance by Joe Gomez, to keep the scores level.

Sadio Mane also fired over from close range.

It has been 19 years since Everton last won at Anfield, and in the second half they arguably looked less likely to breach Liverpool's impressive 2018/19 defence.

As the barrage of substitutions arrived it looked like this would be heading for a goalless draw, until Liverpool's final attack of the game.

A ball sent to the edge of the area found the unlikely attacking threat of Virgil van Dijk.  His shot/cross appeared heading for the top of the goal net before Jordan Pickford clawed it back into the danger area for Divock Origi to have the simplest of headers to win the game for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp celebrated on the field as Anfield erupted.

A special win for the reds who now march on to the next challenge.

Another clean sheet at Anfield means that in the last 11 league games at Anfield, the reds have scored 29 goals and conceded just one solitary goal.
