Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona – The most incredible night at Anfield

Liverpool were given no chance. Liverpool were dead and buried. Liverpool didn't read the script.

It was the most incredible night at a most incredible football stadium as Liverpool defied all the odds to sensationally reach the Champions League Final for a 9th time.

The reds were the best side in Barcelona but somehow came away with a 3-0 deficit thanks to the magnificence of Messi but on a Tuesday night in Merseyside they defied footballing logic.

Mo Salah? Out injured. Roberto Firmino? Out injured. Naby Keita? Out injured.

Liverpool placed youngsters Ben Woodburn and Rhian Brewster on the bench. We were struggling.

So what did we do?

Score in the 7th minute. That's what.

Divock Origi opening the scoring after a blistering start in the 7th minute.

Liverpool pressed hard in the rest of the first half - the dominant side just as they had been in the Camp Nou, but to no avail. Barcelona enjoyed a spell of possession but Alisson was more than the man to deny them.

On to the second half.

A half time substitute when Andy Robertson had to go off injured, replaced by Gini Wijnaldum.

What a replacement.

As Milner switched to left back, Wijnaldum excelled.

A low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Wijnaldum smashed it into the net. 2-0.

122 seconds later Shaqiri sent in a cross for Wijanldum to head in. It's all level.

With 11 minutes left to go, TAA had a corner.  He saw the opening and drilled in the quick corner which Origi passed into the net past Ter Stegen.

Jubilation.

Eruption.

Liverpool had scored their fourth - the winner.

The reds hold their nerve for the final 10 minutes (plus 5 minutes stoppage) and secure their place in back to back Champions League finals - dumping Barcelona out of the competition.

It was, and it is Anfield's greatest night.

Absolutely astonishing.

Madrid. 1st June.
