GREGORY GONE UP NORTH

Liverpool defender Gregory Vignal has joined Rangers on a one-year loan deal.

And the French left-back signed in time to beat the deadline for Rangers' Champions League qualifying tie with CSKA Moscow.

The 23-year-old impressed Ibrox manager Alex McLeish in friendlies against Newcastle, Tottenham and Fulham.

Vignal has only made 14 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Montpellier in 2000 and now he wants to resurrect his career at Ibrox.

He has also been on loan spells at Rennes and Espanyol since arriving at Anfield.

Paolo Vanoli will compete for the left-back spot with Vignal, with last season's first choice Michael Ball on the transfer list.

McLeish has reluctantly agreed to try to move Ball on because of a clause in his contract that means Rangers would have to pay Everton a further £500,000.
