THE GREATEST NIGHT EVER

The past two days have been the greatest days I have known. Football has an amazing capacity to bring such powerful emotions to people, and the euphoria I have felt over the past two days has been amazing. Liverpool has been heaven on Earth.

I was a small lad cowering behind the sofa when we beat AS Roma on penalties twenty one years ago. This time, I almost couldn't watch again.

The first goal within a minute was a sickener, Maldini the 36 year old scored. It was all set to be a Milan fairytale, and Liverpool looked like the rabbits startled in the headlights that we all thought was a possibility. 2-0, 3-0. It was getting embarrasing, we could imagine the relief of the UEFA directors, free from any tricky decisions. The amazing atmosphere that has been building for the best part of a month now was slipping away. We had to make this respectable.

But then something happened. People remembered the club's mantra 'You'll never walk alone'. Tens of thousands of fans had trekked from one side of Europe to the other and did not want to see their club humiliated. The songs sprung up and you know the rest. Liverpool, and every one of their players and supporters, turned the game around and brought the European Cup back to Anfield. This time for good. In years to come, for the rest of your life, when you take your future generations to see that cup, the one that Steven Gerrard lifted on the 25th May 2006, you will be able to talk about Liverpool's finest hour.

Now isn't the right time to speculate about the future. I honestly couldn't care less about being in the competition next season. There will be positives if we are in or out. But they had best remove the word Champions from the competition's name if they dare leave Liverpool, the European Champions, out of the European Champions Cup.

And the player cull will happen. Every one of those players will always be Liverpool heroes but Liverpool moves forward, and Liverpool exists to harbour ambitions to be the best. To dominate, in England and abroad.

To this end I send out my heartfelt thanks to all of the Liverpool players and Rafa Benitez for making me feel so proud to support the greatest club in the world.
