Defensive errors were pretty much to blame throughout for almost every goal.

16 mins : Awful mistake from Carson on the edge of the area gives Faulkner a chance but fortunately his strike hits the head of a Liverpool defender before reaching the empty goal
18 mins : The lively Faulkner almost opens the scoring with a beautifully curled right footed effort from the left angle of the box which just beats Carson's far post
20 mins : Azaouagh goes for goal with a right footed shot from 25 yards but Carson dives to his left to make the save
24 mins : Mainz break forward dangerously again down the left but this time the linesman's flag brings an end to a bright move
28 mins : Damm breaks clear down the left and rounds Carson who had raced out of his goal. With an open goal to aim it he strikes the legs of Sami Hyypia who had got back to make a late and decisive challenge
