OWEN TO SIGN SOON?

Liverpool striker Michael Owen has revealed he may sign a new contract with the Premiership club before the season begins on 14 August.

The 24-year-old striker, who has one year left on his current deal, has been offered a two year extension and has had talks with the Anfield club.

Owen said: "There is no rush but there was a meeting in New York last week and there will be another one next week.

"There's no agreement but it's close. Next week will iron more things out."

He added: "People were talking about the talks months ago - before they had even started. And in fact we have only had about four or five meetings."

Owen had previously hinted that the arrival of new manager Rafael Benitez has swayed his decision to stay at Anfield.

"Everyone in football is very ambitious and wants to win the big prizes... last year we were quite far away from winning the big prizes," he said.
