FERNANDO'S PLEDGE

Fernando Morientes, the Real Madrid player who has been suggested as a make-weight in the Michael Owen saga revealed earlier this week where he believes his future lies.

"Just as last year in the pre-season, I thought that I had to leave the team, but now I'm only thinking about continuing and one of the reasons is the technical staff," said Morientes, who is clearly delighted at the appointment of Jose Antonio Camacho as Madrid coach.

"I've worked with Jose Camacho and know what he could want and I prefer to stay in Madrid and rule out any move.

"I know I am staying at the best club in the world with the best players. It will be a hard fight against great strikers but it's a very long season and there will be three players in attack scoring the goals and I feel I am one of those."

Morientes spent last year on loan at Monaco and has got three Champions League winners medals with Madrid. He has been unable to make headway in to the team since the formation of Raul and Ronaldo up front. He has two years left on his current contract.

Real Madrid play their qualifying match tonight, and like Owen, if Morientes plays any part and cup-ties himself then it will effectively end any talk of him coming to Anfield, although after the players comments it already looks unlikely.
