HOULLIER BACKING OWEN TO STAY

Gerard Houllier says he believes in his opinion that star striker Michael Owen will sign a new contract to remain at Liverpool, when talks begin at the end of the month.

Owen's agent is due back from leave at the end of January and Houllier says he has the backing of the Liverpool board to try and keep their prized asset.

Houllier said: "The board knows that I want to keep Michael. Yes, I would be disappointed if he goes. I would have to deal with the transition period.

"He knows the club has always been good to him and from a technical point of view I think it would be better if he stayed longer here.

"If you want my opinion I think he will re-sign. When his agent comes back we will sit down and talk about his contract."
