DIAO: 'I WILL FIGHT'

Liverpool's Senegalese star Salif Diao is ready to fight for his Anfield future.

Diao was brought to the club by Gerard Houllier, but failed to establish himself in the first team.

He has since become one of the more versatile members of the squad, being used in defence and midfield.

Diao has been linked with a move to Portsmouth, who have expressed an interest in him and his fellow countryman El Hadji Diouf.

However, Diao is looking to remain on Merseyside and fight for his place under new coach Rafael Benitez.

"Further to quotes attributed to Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric, which stated his desire to take Salif Diao to Fratton Park on a season-long loan deal, I would like to make it clear that my client is happy at Anfield and is fully focused on claiming a place in the Liverpool first team this season under new coach Rafael Benitez," said his agent Charles Collymore.

"While injury curtailed his progress under former coach Gerard Houllier, Salif is now fully fit, refreshed and looking forward to impressing not only the new managerial regime at the club, but the Liverpool supporters who he feels are yet to witness his true capabilities.

"While he is flattered by Portsmouth's interest, this latest development has not in any way changed his outlook on the season ahead."
