DERBY REACTION

Man of the match Jamie Carragher

"It seemed as if most of the locals wanted Everton to win today. That's the impression I got from reading the local papers.

"We were under a lot of pressure in the second half when they brought Beattie and Ferguson on and we had to deal with a lot of long balls. But we came through it and got a great victory.

"We're still behind Everton and there's still a lot of games to be played, but this is a massive psychological win for us."

Captain Steven Gerrard

"That was a massive result for us. If we hadn't have been up for the challenge then Everton would have won the game.

"We played really well in the first half and could have added more in the second if Milan had taken his chances. When he was sent off it was hard work for us but we hung in there and defended like lions.

"Everything went wrong for us in terms of injuries today but we stuck together and got a great win."

Rafa Benitez

"I would like to see us play like that in every game because we played fantastic. We played at a high tempo with good passing, good pressure and scored two good goals.

"We then lost three players and four if you include Luis Garcia who was injured but wanted to play the second half.

"We had two great chances with Baros who ran clear but I am happy with this win. We played better than Everton and I am confident we will finish fourth.

"It was great to celebrate with the fans at the end of the match because I wanted to say thank you to them. They were fantastic and it's important to show them how much it meant."

On the injuries

"We need to see how the injuries settle down now.

"Maybe they will all be out for two or three weeks. It's hard to say at this stage but clearly we have a lot of problems at the moment.

"I am so proud of the players for the way they coped with the situation. It was a very difficult game and this is such a good win for us. We played with a high tempo in the first half and definitely deserved our victory."

David Moyes, Bluesh**e boss

"If we had been given enough time at the end yes [we could have equalised], but the officials had other ideas. I mean it wasn't three minutes was it? It was at least five. We scored and the Liverpool fans wouldn't give the ball back and Dudek was time wasting walking from one side to the other with his goal kicks," said the Lord of the Rings star.

"I thought Liverpool were very good in the first half but we went for it in the second half and were a little unlucky. Liverpool did things they haven't done all season. They played well.

"We are still in the position they want to be in so it's great for Everton. We haven't got the same financial resources as teams like Liverpool so it's great for us. If we had won this game and gone four points clear of Liverpool then I would have been dancing up and down the pitch. We are in a great position."
