GERRARD UP FOR TOP AWARD

Stevie G has been nominated for the PFA Footballer of the Year. The last Liverpool player to win the award was John Barnes in 1988.

Gerrard has scored 19 goals so far for Liverpool this season and has had another fine campaign at Anfield being an inspiration to Liverpool.

The PFA's 33rd annual awards dinner will be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, on Sunday, April 23.

Also nominated for the award are Chelsea trio John Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole plus Arsenal captain Thierry Henry and Manchester United's Wayne Rooney.

Commenting on the merits of Gerrard, PFA Chief Gordon Taylor said: "He's a bit special isn't he?

"Last year's Champions League Final has to go down as one of the greatest games of all time and a combination of Steven's leadership skills and Jamie Carragher's defensive qualities, set up an unlikely Liverpool win, the likes of which I never thought I would see against AC Milan.

"At half time everybody, me included, was hoping for damage limitation but what impressed everybody was not just the spirit of Liverpool team, but the way Steven led from the front."
