MACCA AND ALDO WEIGH IN

Both former Liverpool players Steve McMahon and John Aldridge have been giving their verdicts on the striking dilemma at Anfield.

John Aldridge was speaking to Radio 5's sportsweek programme and said: "From what I see, Rafa has a big dilemma, but I think you will see him reaching for the chequebook at the end of the season to buy two strikers, not just one."

"Michael Owen is a possibility. He is one that would come into the frame, among others.

"I'd like to see him get the likes of [Jermain] Defoe or Robbie Keane. I like Darren Bent, while Craig Bellamy would fit the bill.

"You need that type of player with pace, direction and a knack of goalscoring, someone like Bent. I see something in him that I like, that rawness. It would be a gamble to a certain degree, but sometimes you have to take these chances.

"He is the type of player Liverpool have to go and get."

The big question is how much money Benitez will be handed by the board, with doubts over his future raised as there is a suggestion lack of cash is a problem.

"I think he is a man of total integrity and honesty after speaking to him on quite a few occasions."

"He's got another three years on his contract, and I believe he will honour that. As for money, I think he will get it. He's not going to get what you see at Chelsea, but he will get a fair share of cash."

Steve McMahon, the former Liverpool captain, was also scathing.

"The result at Anfield was an absolute disaster," he said.

"The result simply justifies what every critic said about their lack of goalscorers. There really isn't an answer."

"The transfer window is gone, Peter Crouch is not up to the standard that many people think he is, Robbie Fowler is past his sell-by date, Fernando Morientes has only done it in fits and starts, Djibril Cisse has not delivered time and again."

"I think there is a major, major problem. And it's not likely to be solved when the Reds go to Highbury."
