REDS IN STRANGE WORLD CUP SQUAD

Sven at Melwood earlier this year

Sven Goran Ericksonn has named his 23 man preliminary World Cup squad with some surprising additions.

Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch are Liverpool's contingent in the 23 man squad - with Scott Carson on standby for possible goalkeeping duties.

Sven decided 'this morning' to add Arsenal's 17 year old prodigal talent Theo Walcott, leaving out Jermaine Defoe and Darren Bent. Theo Walcott has yet to play for Arsenal's first team.

With Owen and Rooney included, but both recovering from injuries - Theo Walcott could very well see World Cup action before Premiership football.

Stewart Downing of Middlesborough and Munich's Owen Hargreaves are other surprise additions.

Provisional squad:
Robinson (Tottenham), James (Manchester City), Green (Norwich); G Neville (Manchester United), Ferdinand (Manchester United), Terry (Chelsea), Cole (Arsenal), Campbell (Arsenal), Carragher (Liverpool), Bridge (Chelsea), Beckham (Real Madrid), Carrick (Tottenham), Lampard (Chelsea), Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Jenas (Tottenham), Downing (Middlesbrough), J Cole (Chelsea), Lennon (Tottenham), Rooney (Manchester United), Owen (Newcastle), Crouch (Liverpool), Walcott (Arsenal).

Standby:
Carson (Liverpool), Young (Charlton), Reo-Coker (West Ham), Defoe (Tottenham), Johnson (Crystal Palace).
