RAFA BACKS REINA

Rafa stands by his man

Any thoughts that Rafa might axe Pepe Reina after his poor performance of the last two games were put on the backburner today.

I have a lot of confidence in Pepe Reina after he collected 33 clean sheets last season to improve on Ray Clemence's record," Rafa said. "We need to improve our defence. Last season we were doing these things perfectly and now we need to start again.

"We decided to use Finnan, Carragher and Hyypia because they were players who had experience of derbies and they made mistakes. I know how important the derby is to the supporters but they must remember it is still only three points."

Rafa was looking ahead to tomorrow's game after the reds arrived in Holland early this afternoon.

"Obviously if you want to change things you need to play again and to win. It's as simple as that," he said at a press conference in Holland on Monday evening.

"I hope I don't see a lot of mistakes tomorrow - at least in our team. Always as a manager you think you can improve and I think you will see a lot of positive things tomorrow."
