Liverpool 0-0 Portsmouth (2-4 on pens)

Liverpool – losing on penalties? It does happen, and the Barclays Asia Trophy went to Portsmouth who made the most of Liverpool’s failure from the penalty spot.

Torres see his penalty saved

Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun have obviously yet to learn the Liverpool penalty way as they both failed to convert their penalties.

The tournament however has boosted the reds profile in Hong Kong and Liverpool were fortunate to receive international clearance allowing Torres and Babel to play just minutes before kick off.

The Liverpool boss was not unduly worried by the outcome, saying: “Anyone can miss a penalty so I’m not going to attach blame.”

However, he will be concerned that Dirk Kuyt, Ryan Babel and Torres all failed to beat James in normal time as Liverpool created more than enough chances to bury their opponents.

It is a profligacy they cannot afford as they look to close the gap on Manchester United and Chelsea.

Benitez added: “We have to improve but we had plenty of possession and chances. I just think we need to be fitter. It’s disappointing to lose but it has been a useful tournament for us.”

Kuyt was the culprit in the first half, missing the target when well-placed on three occasions and then directing a downward header at James after Jermaine Pennant’s cross found him unmarked on the edge of the box.

Liverpool next play in the Rotterdam tournament.

  1. Hold on now, we are being a little over the top here, lets just give these summer signings a chance to adapt to the way the english teams play. We all need to trust Rafa he is making a good team, i know we are all disappointed in the way we havent won the league since 1990, Rafa needs time and i hope we all stick by him and the team, dont forget it took United 3 seasons to get the team they now have to gel, im just looking forward to the future and hope the Anfield name stays with us!!!!

  2. rafa said he has many options; but none of them could score goals. they could not beat even portsmouth, how could they defeat the mighty manU and chelsea? rafa moved fast in signing benayoon and babel but then he stopped and allowed chelsea to move to sign daniel alves. you will pay a high price for that slow move.

  3. extremely disappointed. the new signings donot improve the team apparently. compared with ManU and chelsea we may finish third again next year. RAFA has to take john barnes’s commments into account seriously. all the same, as far as i could see, our wingers we now have didnot supply the ball to strikers effectively. daniel alves would definitely compensate this i think.
