Horrible news reaching us today that Liverpool's 28 year old Portugese forward, Diogo Jota, has been killed in a car accident in the Zamora province of Spain.
The player and his 26 year old brother Andre, also a professional footballer, were in a Lamborghini which suffered a tyre blow out and the car set on fire. Spain's Guardia civil have confirmed the deaths of both players to the BBC.
Diogo has three young children and married his long term partner, Rute Cardoso, less than a fortnight ago on the 22nd June.
The full statement from Spanish police reads:
"The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.
"It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.
"The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed."
Jota was travelling with his brother from Portugal to Santander in Spain, where he ultimately aimed to catch a ferry to England to join pre-season training with Liverpool last week. He had been advised by his doctor not to travel by airplane due to some recent minor lung surgery.
Liverpool FC have expressed their shock, saying it is a "tragedy that transcends" the club. Arne Slot and Jurgen Klopp have both expressed their shock and disappointment alongside his international team-mates and clubs around the world.
Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. Our thoughts with all his family and friends at this terrible time.
