An e-petition demanding that the Government fully disclose the documents from the 1989 Hillsborough disaster has passed a landmark figure earlier tonight.
It is only the second Government e-petition to pass the 100,000 mark – the level at which the Commons Backbench Business Committee must discuss it for a debate amongst MP’s.
A Freedom of Information request was made by the BBC two years ago for release of the documents, which were Government discussions and briefings involving then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
The Information Commissioner recently criticised the Cabinet Office of the UK for their
“unjustified and excessive delays”
in releasing the documents and ordered their release.
Government attempt to hide documents
However, the current Government decided to appeal against that decision in order to prevent these files being made public.
In response, Liverpool fans, websites, groups, forums, fans of other clubs, some MP’s and even Kenny Dalglish have all helped push the e-petition past this landmark number.
Will these files now be released? Or will the Government oppose the will of the people, and the families who still seek justice over 22 and half years after 96 fans were killed at Hillsborough.
