Match Preview – Aston Villa (h)

FA Premiership
Sun 22nd March 2009 @ 4pm, Anfield

Aston Villa are the high flying visitors to Anfield this weekend as the reds hope to build on 2 Premiership victories over Sunderland and Manchester United. With United playing the day before, the reds could find themselves 7 points behind the leaders so another victory would be a massive boost in not only maintaining a title push but ensuring the reds qualify for one of the two automatic places in next season’s Champions League group stage.

Aston Villa are having a fantastic season under Martin O’Neill and with a crop of talented young English players.

Both Daniel Agger and Alvaro Arbeloa are pushing for returns to the side after injury, although Xabi Alonso and Yossi Benayoun are still on the Liverpool treatment table.

History

Liverpool have a decent record against Aston Villa at Anfield. Of the 86 games played the reds have run out winners 55 times, with 17 draws and only 14 defeats.

Last season was a 2-2 draw at Anfield with Crouch and Benayoun scoring for the reds. This season’s reverse fixture at Villa Park saw a 0-0 stalemate.

Betting

Liverpool are favourites with the bookmakers, although even we feel Villa’s odds are a little bit silly. No doubt Villa fans will be having a punt on their side

Liverpool 8/15
Draw 3/1
Aston Villa 7/1

Interestingly the odds of Liverpool scoring 4 have been slashed since the last two games, however a popular scoreline in recent years has been 3-1 for the reds. You can get this for 14/1.
