And so Liverpool approach the final game of the season in what, if selected, will be a swansong for Liverpool legend Sami Hyypia. After 10 years at the club and over 450 appearances and 35 goals for Liverpool (not a bad return for a centre-half) he will be moving on to the Bundesliga in the summer. Robbie Keane, who spent a brief 5 months at Anfield and made far less of an impact than the big Finn who cost a tenth of his price, will captain his Spurs side who need a victory to stand any chance of playing European football next season.
While Liverpool can no longer catch United some significant milestones still remain. Pepe Reina is hoping to catch Van der Saar in the race for clean sheets this season to stand a chance of retaining the Golden Glove which he has won every season since joining Liverpool. A two goal cushion for the reds would see us end up with a goal difference of +50. And by avoiding defeat the reds will match our 1987/88 record of losing just twice.
The title is notoriously difficult to win, but after this match Rafa Benitez will have secured Liverpool two of their best four league campaigns ever in terms of points per game. We owe Spurs. Harry Redknapp’s men managed to get a 2-1 victory over us at White Hart Lane in the league early this season in a game the reds dominated. Weeks later the reds lost 4-2 in the Carling Cup in a display that was a huge disappointment for the likes of Dossena.
Spurs have a habit of nicking draws at Anfield. They have taken a point in 3 of the last 5 games at our place. Whilst they have knocked us out of two cup competitions at Anfield, the last league victory for Spurs up here was 16 years ago.
