Giggs beats Gerrard to award

Ryan Giggs was named the PFA (Professional Football Association’s) player of the year at a ceremony in London last night.

Ryan Giggs has started 12 matches this season and scored one goal.

Giggs beat Manchester United FC team-mates Nemanja Vidić, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edwin van der Sar as well as Liverpool FC’s Steven Gerrard to take the prize, voted for by his fellow professionals, for the first time in his long career.

The team of the year was named as:

Edwin Van der Sar (Manchester United FC), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth FC), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United FC), Nemanja Vidić (Manchester United FC), Patrice Evra (Manchester United FC), Ashley Young (Aston Villa FC), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool FC), Ryan Giggs (Manchester United FC), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United FC), Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea FC), Fernando Torres (Liverpool FC).

Giggs beats Gerrard to award

  1. This makes the award mickey mouse. just devalues it. How can a player who has played 12 games and one goal win. It should not be based on past perfomances but current form. Shame on those who voted for Giggs.

    • True…although heard award is also based on achievements throughout the Year …

if thats the case the personally he has broke a few records this season and that probably justifies it a little more.

Although we were suprised as you are.

  2. It’s not fair to me why is it because he is grown, if that’s the matter then i think he should go home and take care of his extended family cos he is too old if is this then i will understand.

  3. Hopefully now he can retire what a load off bollocks 12 games 1 lucky goal v west ham and he gets the award surely this is fixed cant nobody see this.

  4. By giving this to Giggs in a season he played 12 games and scored 1 goal makes a mockery of the whole award. Maybe next season someone can win it by playing 6 games and scoring 2 goals.

  5. This is absolute bulls**t. Starting just 12 games and winning this award is an absolute joke. He hasnt even been anywhere near any of his Man U teammates that were nominated never mind Gerrard. I have to agree with anfield online, Giggs probably should have won this award before but definately not now. How can it be awarded now anyway? Theres still 4 games left to play.
This is the biggest load of s**t ive seen in 14 years of following football.

  6. What a Joke! I’d have put it between Vidic and Gerrard at the worst..

It looks like, once again, SAF says that something should happen, and, once again, it does! FFS!

  7. Totally bizarre.

I know Footballer’s voted, and I know the vast majority of them won’t be going on University Challenge anytime soon – but still – they all need their heads examining.

  8. Laughable. Why give the award out before seasons over? IMO, best player of the Prem has been Rooney. Gerrard 2nd. And that comes from a Liverpool supporter.

  9. What a bunch of BS! One friggin goal and he wins it? It just goes to show the bias pissoffs get just for bein 35 years old or whatever the hell his age is. Could’ve easily been Gerrard, Ronaldo, Vidic or Ferdinand. BUT NO. They choose a laughable fu**tard. I don’t care how awesome he was decades ago, this award isn’t his and today is the day I have lost my interest and respect for this joke of an award. Big WTF.

  10. Is this some sort of joke… Starts just 12 matches and scores one goal.. Ideally Steve G should have won but there are others surely ahead of Giggs

    • Totally Agree. Even putting aside my obvious LFC bias – I don’t even think Ryan Giggs was the best of United’s candidates.

I appreciate he hasn’t won it before, and probably should have, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for him to get it now.
