Rumours: RBS refinancing and Alonso

We all know that Liverpool never like to conclude business early, and so that continues with Liverpool’s refinancing of the £350 M loan from RBS and Wachovia.

The deadline for the loan to be repaid is tomorrow.  Despite campaigns organised by the fans to attempt to stop the banks lending Hicks and Gillett the amount – several reports had suggested that a deal to extend the loan for another 12 months will be made.

However, it appears that the deadline may receive a temporary extension as both Hicks and Gillett are still in discussions with the two main banks who are taking £40M in interest payments per year.

Only last month RBS took the unusual step of writing an open letter to Liverpool fans expressing their desire for a ‘long term relationship’.

If somebody was paying me £40M a year I’d want a long-term relationship with them too.

Meanwhile Xabi Alonso is still a hot topic amongst Liverpool fans.

After sitting out yesterday’s game after an alleged ‘ankle injury’ the grapevine suggests Madrid have increased their offer to £30M.  Rafa Benitez has been insistent that Alonso will not be allowed to leave for less than £35M.

A number of players have been linked with Liverpool if Alonso departs including Moussa Sissoko (Toulouse), Esteban Cambiasso (Inter Milan), Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid), Alberto Aquilani (Roma) and Javi Martinez of Atletic Bilbao.

Rumours: RBS refinancing and Alonso

  1. Alonso can go but only for the right price that is atleast £35 million. His heart may not be in it but Rafa has to do what’s best for the club so Xabi put that in your pipe and smoke it!.

The financial side won’t be getting better unless the American’s sell or the shareLFC group come up with something.

  2. King Sensai – Arbeloa is in no way vital to our prem chances – he’s a better than average right back with one year left on his contract – if we can get £5m & he wants to go take it. Of course he’s a better right back than Carra, Carra is a centre half that sometimes fills in as a right back due to injuries. We have Johnson now who is a far better player than Arb. Alonso will be a massive loss but if he wants out then we should get shut, he’s 28 now, I think, so I don’t think you’d get £30m + next summer – I think he’ll be hard to replace though, unless Rafa moves Gerrard back to CM – but would you after the season he’s just had?

  3. Alonso goes ! but not Arbeloa, he is vital to our prem chances and what agreat player he is. Mind you Carragher dosnt think so!!!.
He is far better than Carra at right back and plays well at left as well.
Don’t sell Arbeloa he keeps the ball and finds his man as well as any. Cant think of any better apart from Alonso!!!!!

  4. I dont want to see alonso go but i suppose if he does, we need a midfielder with the same class as him we dont have a decent enough midfield with him gon and no back-up i like the sound of sneijder or cambiasso.

  5. It`s clear that Alonso isn`t fully committed to Lfc and our cause. Which means he has to go. It`s bad PR to have such players in your team, and it`s disrupting for the team as we`re gearing up for the new season. Let him go but for nothing less than 30million pounds.
Mascherano we need to keep of course. Give him a pay-hike and bring in a top-class replacement for Alonso. Lucas and Spearing are not ready for the step-up yet. Daniele De Rossi would be an ideal replacement, but someone like Cambiasso or Esteban Granero could also work. Or what about Fabregas? An exchange between Pool and the Gunners would amaze the world… won`t happen though. Sneijder is not exactly the type we need, neither is the injury-prone Aquilani. We need someone of the highest quality a la De Rossi or Cambiasso.
