Jose Enrique ready to welcome a new left back

Liverpool defender Jose Enrique today insisted he was not afraid of competition for his place.

With Jack Robinson now on loan at Blackpool, occasional left back Jamie Carragher retired and Glen Johnson preferred in the right back role - our Spanish defender has seen the competition for his place dwindle.

Liverpool have been linked in recent weeks with a number of left backs - Lorenzo Melgarejo of Benfica (loan now looking unlikely), Guilherme Siqueira of Granada and Ally Cissokho of Valencia.

Brendan Rodgers even admitted publically that left back was a key priority in the summer transfer dealings, saying:

"There are obviously certain areas of the squad where we're a bit thinner than others.

"We probably need a bit more support - that extra bit of quality - at the top end of the field and that's something we'll look out for.

"That'll be mixed with needing cover in the left-back position - that's something we're looking at. It's not really about numbers, it's about quality.

"If we can do that over the next number of weeks we'll be happy."

But this isn't a concern for Enrique who was speaking to the official website:

"Of course, you need two players in every position.

"If I was injured last year we were playing Glen Johnson on the left. We know Glen, he can play anywhere, but you need two players for any position. He will be more than welcome."

Enrique also went on to suggest that the arrival of new Spanish blood at Anfield was key to Brendan Rodgers' footballing philosophy.

"The type of football he wants to play takes time to use.

"Now we have had one year with him and the players that have come already know how to play because they are from Spain - they know how to play the system.

Enrique is part of the Liverpool squad travelling to Norway today - in preparation for tomorrow's friendly game against Vālerenga.

Jose Enrique ready to welcome a new left back

  1. Enrique is a player that needs the competition for his place. He started well for us, had a bad patch, but parts of last season he looked a lot more comfortable under Rodgers. He certainly offers a threat going forward.

He does let too many crosses in though – and we conceded so many goals that way last season. We need to cut down on the supply of those balls in to the box.

One other thing – with Reina going – it looks like Enrique is one of the few ‘characters’ left at the club.
