Match Preview – Liverpool v PSV

UEFA Champions League
Group Stage Match 2

Wed 1st October 2008 @ Anfield

Liverpool find themselves re-united with PSV Eindhoven in the group stages. The reds played PSV four times on the way to Athens in 2007 – two group fixtures and then the quarter final tie.

Former red Jan Kromkamp makes his second return to Anfield hoping to eradicate the memory of their 2-0 and 1-0 defeats that season.

Kromkamp had this to say ahead of the game.

“I think they have become a stronger team the past two seasons. They have always fielded a strong team, but since then, they have strengthened their squad with the signings of several quality players”.

“Liverpool are a very good team that has played a major role in the Champions League in consecutive seasons. It will be tough to find weak spots in their team.”

“Keeping a clean sheet is important. Liverpool have a very strong defence, and once we have conceded a goal, it will be difficult for us to claim victory here. But I am looking forward to Wednesday night’s clash with Liverpool. It is just great to play football at Anfield, as there is always a terrific atmosphere. We want to make amends for our poor start in the Champions League.”

Talented PSV midfielder Ibrahim Afellay misses the game through injury.

The reds kick started their Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Marseille and PSV were taken apart at home by Atletico Madrid.
