Match Preview – PSV v Liverpool

UEFA Champions League
Group Stage Match 6

Tue 9th December 2008 7.45pm @ Philips Stadion

Liverpool have already qualified for the Champions League knockout face although after a relatively indifferent couple of games, find themselves behind leaders Atletico Madrid on goal difference.

This year the majority of the groups have gone exactly with expectations and Liverpool may be well advised to try and clinch that top spot.  Atletico’s goal difference is one better than the reds but because identical results were scored home and away against the Madrid side – complex rules could be in place.

If Liverpool and Atletico end up on the same Pts, GD, goals scored and conceded then Liverpool will progress due to their higher UEFA coeffecient ranking.

Daniel Agger is almost certain to return to the reds side, as the impressive Sami Hyypia, foolishly, isn’t even in the UEFA Champions League squad for the group stages.  Robbie Keane may mark a return to the side after being dropped for the 3-1 victory away at Blackburn.

History

In 2006/07 Liverpool played PSV Eindhoven four times in the Champions League, winning 2-0 and 1-0 at Anfield, and winning 3-0 away.  In the group stage the result in Eindhoven was a 0-0 draw.  In the group stage game at Anfield back in October, the reds ran out 3-1 winners.

Betting

The bookies have made PSV Eindhoven favourites for this game.

Liverpool 9/5
Draw 12/5
PSV 13/8

The draw and a PSV 1-0 win are both at 6/1.  A repeat of the 3-0 the reds managed in Eindhoven in the knockouts in 06/07 can be had for a whopping 40/1.
