Thursday transfer round up

Gael Clichy - are Arsenal blocking a move?

Liverpool’s most pressing transfer issue appears to be whether to make a move for Ipswich Town’s young striker Connor Wickham.  Sunderland have upped the ante by tabling a bid – believed to be £8M for the youngster.

It is now up to Liverpool to show how interested they are in the player.

Stewart Downing wants to move to Liverpool according to the media, but it appears he won’t arrive cheaply.  Man Utd are set to conclude a massive £17M deal for Ashley Young, even though the player could leave for nothing in a years time.  Downing meanwhile has a further 12 months on his contract, so it is likely that the reds will be asked to pay at least the same kind of figure.

Charlie Adam is still being linked with Liverpool, although fewer rumours have emerged in recent days.  Speculation is now linking him more with a move to Aston Villa.

Dimitri Payet, the St Etienne winger who Damien Comolli knows well, is being linked with the reds again – as he was in January.  A £10M bid could land the player.

Meanwhile the left back problem may be nearing a conclusion. Arsenal do not want Gael Clichy to come to Liverpool, reminiscent of United blocking Gabriel Heinze’s move a few years back.  However the player could rebuff Roma’s overtures to force a move to Anfield.

Thursday transfer round up

  1. Young signed a 5 year contract extension deal with United the second his transfer went through…so much for leaving in one years time….18 mil seems like a good deal.

  2. Don’t we need a centre half or 2? what happened to Mertasacker, brilliant to hear that the void left by the stupid sell of Riise at left back could be finally wrapped up with an experienced yet fairly young Clichy, as for wingers well United sod off and have him IMO, on the other hand we have our own dilemma’s rumours surrounding Downing or Mata hmmmm tough 1 I think I would prefer the 21 year old Spanish wiz kid i think is fair. I also  feel we have the midfield wrapped up Adam to me would just be a bench warmer and if we were to buy any midfielder please bring back Alonso, he has openly said that ‘anything is possible’ when asked about a move back we have gerrard  (getting on a bit) lucas (finally proving himself) spearing (still has a ways but…..) and Meireles (who has done a pretty good job this year), and what about a bid for Augero I read???? that name I think might turn heads as to the intentions of the club and desire that the new owners have plus it meets their criteria young and talent that is also proven…….. but we still have a month and a lil bit to go, so watch the space.

  3. we want good signings o, Sanchez, jefferen Suarez, Charley Adams, josse Enrique, McCarthy, Zapata, Lennon, Adam Johnson, samba,  will do.

  4. hope downing stays put.he will be too expensive and dont rate him that highly.juan mata is a far better buy.bit of a worry with no big names coming like we were told

  5. Good far great potential targets for liverpool, its important that we must not pay stuart downing more than 15 million. 17-20 million is too much. Clichy good signing, but I think Aly Cissokho of Lyon could be a better, younger option for liverpool only 23. Charlie Adam can be added to depth of squad but that would mean spearing and jonjo would get way less playing time. Connor Wickham is a good backup option with great potential. I think with these signings, liverpool just need one world class winger in the calibre of player like Mata and believe me we will be title contenders.

    • I seem to remember Ripley, Wilcox, Gallacher, Sherwood and Sutton not really exciting people much in the summer of 1994. Won Blackburn a title though. Get back to playing Champ manager. Or should that be Chump manager?
