LFC International Round Up

by Anfield Online | Sunday 11th October 2009 | @jd77

Yesterday was a busy day of international matches for many Liverpool players – with various players at different stages of World Cup qualification.

Argentina however, captained by Mascherano, gave a debut to Emiliano Insua who played for the full game as they secured a vital 2-1 victory over Peru.

Maradona’s men have another crunch clash against Uruguay on Wednesday.

While still recovering from back surgery, many reds will have been concerned that Daniel Agger was named in Denmark’s starting line up against Sweden. However Agger came through the full 90 minutes and Denmark’s victory means they will be going to the World Cup next summer.

Andriy Voronin sat on the bench to watch his Ukraine side beat England 1-0. England have already qualified but it was still a disappointing result.  Glen Johnson put in a full shift but Steven Gerrard was removed at half time after suffering with a thigh injury.

In Spain, Pepe Reina got a surprise starting place. He didn’t disappoint as Spain went on to record their 9th straight win – 2-1 against Armenia. Torres played for just under the hour with Albert Riera staying on the bench.

Holland played a friendly against Australia. Ryan Babel replaced Dirk Kuyt after 50 minutes but the game still petered out in to a 0-0 draw.

Skrtel and Benayoun will both still be hoping to get their countries qualified for the World Cup. Yossi captained Israel to a 3-1 win over Moldova, but Slovakia went down 2-0 to Slovenia.
