Roy in with a day to spare

Roy Hodgson to join Liverpool

Liverpool are likely to unveil new manager, Roy Hodgson, today – just a day before the players begin to return to Melwood for pre-season training.  The 62 year old manager is set to sign a 2 year contract with a possibility of a further one year extension.

After the £6M exit of Rafa Benitez at the start of the month, Christian Purslow has been charged with finding a new manager for the club.  Although it required some arm-twisting to get Roy Hodgson, transfer budgets and the possibility of a vacant England job all clouding the issue, the reds have agreed to pay £2M to Fulham as compensation.

The Liverpool players not involved at the World Cup will return to pre-season training tomorrow – with the reds friendly campaign and Europa League qualification needed during July.

Liverpool will be Roy’s 16th club in his 35 year management career.  Despite success back in the 70’s, and 80’s with Swedish and Danish sides – Roy’s brief stint at Inter Milan, his only major club, proved relatively unsuccesful.

He has been an international manager on a number of occasions including Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and Finland.

Last season he took Fulham to 12th place in the Premier League (W12 D10 L16) and to the final of the Europa League.  He was named Manager of the Year.

Roy is likely to bring Mike Kelly, his assistant from Fulham to the club, leaving no role for Sammy Lee.  Some of Liverpool’s technical staff have already moved to Inter Milan with Rafa Benitez.

It is likely that one of Roy’s first jobs is to oversee the sale of Yossi Benayoun to Chelsea.

Anfield Online would like to wish Roy all the best in his new role.  Our advice would be to trust none of the snakes in the boardroom.

  1. Though not my ideal choice still Roy Hodgson will receive my complete support in what seems to be a near impossible job.Hopefully he can persuade atleast one if not both of our major stars to remain at the club. We’ve got some deadwood to get rid of that should bring in much needed revenue on top of whatever the owners give!.Further good news is that fans will be able to understand his comments much better then our previous manager.

  2. Tryin my best to get excited about this but I can’t..no disrespect to Roy I just can’t see what he brings that will help us break back into top 4 let alone win a trophy..who knows he may prove me wrong

  3. I think Roy Hodgson’ appointment will be a stabilising influence for the club. He is taking over one of the most difficult jobs in the Premiership. A club at odds with the owners, very little cash and players we need to hang onto.
    So, good luck Roy!

  4. I think that he is great coach and best what we can afford right now. And the best thing is that he is from England 😉 He managed to get to Europa league final with FULHAM and it is great achievment. I think that we can raise some trophyes this year !

    • he was not my first choice kenny would have been and i cant understand why he was not atleast given a chance,, if the wanks sorry yanks, no lets go with the first 1 if the wanks sell the club would the new owners keep roy hodgson????? all depending on the clubs position in the leauge, he needs to get rid of a lot of rubbish at the club,, lucas (main 1 ) ngog, insua amongst others, if steve wants to go and nando well so be it, do we really want players who dont want to be their????good luck roy..

  5. Same age as Joe fagan when he took the job, so that must be a good omen? OK I’m clutching at straws here. Roy Hodgson wouldn’t ahve been my first choice and in an ideal world wouldn’t have even been on the shortlist. However, his appointment is a direct reflection of where we are as a club right now. I’d urge all true fans to get behind the new manager, it’s the Yanks you should aim your venom at.

    • Here Here at the very least he’s got a track record for getting results with what he’s got to work with so fingers crossed !
