Liverpool v Middlesbrough badgeLiverpool play their first competitive home game of the season against Middlesbrough in the Premiership.

Sami Hyypia is set to miss the clash due to injury sustained on international duty.  The player who is in his testimonial year at Anfield started the reds Premiership campaign last week against Sunderland.

Martin Skrtel will be back in contention after recovering from a pre-season injury, and Ryan Babel is back in the squad after his exploits over at the Olympics in Beijing. Lucas Leiva and Javier Mascherano are both still in China.

Liverpool have not win their first two games of the season for 7 years.

History

Liverpool have not been beaten by Boro in the last seven league meetings (of which the reds have won four). Middlesbrough have never beaten Liverpool at Anfield in the Premiership, and in league meetings overall have only managed it on 13 occassions out of 66.  Last season Middlesbrough took an early 1-0 lead but the reds eventually ran out 3-2 winners thanks to a magnificent Fernando Torres hat-trick.  Middlesbrough beat Spurs 2-1 last week
